The Bible says”Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (Il Timothy 2:15). Again, the Lord Jesus Himself commands us to “search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39). David, the Psalmist, said: “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11).
In Joshua 1:8, God commanded Joshua and said to him: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success”.
The four places that I have quoted above are just some of the several places where we have been commanded to study the word of God. There are many benefits for us when we study the word of God and obey it by living our life according to His words.
In the first place I quoted, Apostle Paul was admonishing Timothy to study the word of God which would bring God’s approval of him and again, he will not be put to shame which could be so if he were ignorant. Secondly, the Lord Jesus says that the word of God will lead us to eternal life and it also teaches us about Him.
So then, the more we study the word of God, the more we know the truth; the more God will approve of us and Jesus will reveal Himself more and more to us.
In the command of God to Joshua, God told him that the more he studied and meditated on the word of God, (the book of law), his way would be made prosperous and he would have, not just success, but good success.
Are there benefits in studying the word of God? You’d better believe it, there are a lot of benefits. Psalms 1:1-3 says “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is in the law of the Lord and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper”. Praise the LORD!
The word of God that I have referred to above says that if your delight is in studying the word of God and meditating on it, you shall be like a tree that is planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season and that whatsoever you do shall prosper.
My question now is how much of the word of God do know,? The main reason why you and I must study the word of God include the following:
• it will make us to know more about God our Creator.
• It will help us to know God’s commands.
• It will help us to keep away from sin.
• It will make us wise.
• It will draw us closer to God.
• It will make us to love God more than anything else.
• It will make the gift of God in us to manifest.
• It will help us to pattern our lives after righteousness as we study about the lives of those before us who walked faithfully with God and also avoid the mistakes of those who failed in their own journey with God.
• It will help us to learn lessons about those who did not walk faithfully with God to the end so that we can avoid their errors and their eternal consequences.
• It will help us to discover how to do the work of God according to our individual callings/abilities and succeed.
• It will teach us how to develop, mature and grow and manifest the nature of Christ such as:
– Righteousness, holiness and purity.
– Patience, long-suffering, tolerance and perseverance.
– Love, care, kindness, compassion towards others.
– Gentleness, meekness and selflessness.
– Impartiality, firmness, fairness and faithfulness.
– Submissiveness, surrenderedness, consecration to God and His will in our daily walk with Him.
– Wisdom, knowledge and understanding.
• It will help us to discover our rights and benefits as true children of God
• It will make us to see and desire more of the things of God and heaven more than all the mundane things of this world and its sinfulness.
• It will endue us with power, authority and Dominion over the enemy of our soul.
There are innumerable benefits in having the knowledge of the word of God. The word of God will even teach us how to be prosperous in our sarcular works. The Bible is a book full of divine wisdom and power to excel, prosper and succeed in our works and ministries.
For you to have and exercise Dominion over your enemies, the word of God; the scriptures must be your companion. It should be the number one book in your life.
Many people read other books, newspapers, magazines, journals and other literature materials from cover to cover, but they have no interest in reading the word of God. How can a person like this be victorious over the Devil and his cohorts who walk about as roaring lions seeking whom they may devour? How can a person like this exercise authority and dominion over witches and wizards and other forces of darkness?
It is the Bible that teaches you how to wave war against these deadly agents of Satan, your adversary. David, the king of Israel said: “Blessed be the LORD my strength which teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight” (Psalms 144:1).
When you read and study the Bible, God will teach you how to fight spiritual battles and wars against Satan and his armies and defeat them roundly.
By studying the Bible, you will discover and acquire power to fight and win Satan and his agents. The word of God in your mouth will become fire; liquid and acidic fire against the forces of darkness that war against you every day.
The more you keep away from the word of God, the weaker and more susceptible brutal and deadly attacks you will become, and Satan and his agents will turn you to their punching bag and an object on which they test their powers, weapons and destructive devices.
The Bible says: “My son forget not my law but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days and long life and peace shall they add to thee” (Proverbs 3:1-2).
Many people die before their time because of their ignorance of the word of God. The knowledge of the word of God will expose you to know the reason why you should live long on earth, be prosperous and healthy.
If you say that you are a child of God wanting and wishing to be successful in life, you must get the Bible and turn it into your breakfast, lunch and dinner. That means that you will love it as you love the food you eat and study it as much as you eat your food every day.
The Bible is a book of power, a book of knowledge, and a book of wisdom. You can’t get to heaven as an ignorant Christian. In a nutshell, you cannot get to heaven, the abode of God whose laws are contained and explained in the Bible, being ignorant of the content of the Bible. As a matter of fact, the Bible is the map and compass through which we can navigate and discover the location of Heaven where God dwells.
To show you how important knowledge of the word of God is to all who desire to spend eternity in heaven with Jesus, the Lord commanded Moses to instruct the children of Israel and said: “Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hands that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates. That thy days may be multiplied, and the days of your children in the land which the LORD aware unto your fathers to give them as the days of heaven upon the earth” (Deuteronomy 11:18-21).
Study the word of God. Give it quality time and concentration. Let it be the most important and most read book in your household. Teach your children and let them grow knowing that there is a Mighty God that should be feared, loved, honoured, worshipped and obeyed. If you fail in this area, this is the greatest failure and the consequence could be fatal and eternal.
The Bible says about Timothy: “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15).
There is no power that can be compared to the power in the word of God. And there is no book of wisdom that can be compared to the Bible, the word of God.
Ignorance of the word of God can be very dangerous and can amount to a sin against the ignorant. So, make it a habit to study and know the word of God.
