“Search the scriptures,” says the Lord Jesus. “For in them ye think ye have eternal life and they are they which testify of me.”
Reading and studying the word of God is a command from the Lord Jesus Christ to us his children and servants. Failure to do this will amount to disobedience. Secondly, without giving quality time to reading and studying and meditating on the word of God will leave the believer an ignorant person. A Christian without the knowledge of the word of God will be a powerless Christian.
To be ignorant of the word of God will make a believer a man or woman living under the whims and caprices and at the mercy of his enemies and Satan their father. Such a believer without the knowledge of the word of God will remain blind, deaf and dumb and will not be able to tackle even the smallest spiritual challenge.
It would have been better for such a person not to be have born at all than to come into this world of wickedness and live without the knowledge of the word of God which holds the key to whatever he or she has come to this earth to be or achieve.
Majority of the people who die prematurely or suddenly die for their lack of the knowledge and understanding of the word of God. A little knowledge of the word of God, will save a person from many troubles and dangers.
The Bible is a book of knowledge. It is a book of wisdom. It is a book of power. It is the book of books. Several books ever written by man have their foundations from the words got through the study of the Bible – the word of God.
Nobody can confidently call himself a true Christian or believer who has not made the Bible his number one book. No one can truly call himself a true Christian who has not made the Bible his number one companion.
The big question is, how could one call himself a child of God and yet he does not know what his father says? He doesn’t know the dos and donts of his father.
Before the Lord Jesus Christ gave the commandment for us to search the scriptures, God Himself had commanded and said: “…these words which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house and on thy gates”.
From what God commanded here, we can see that God holds his word very highly. He commands us to even bind it as a sign upon our hands, paste it on our gates and we should make it as frontlets upon our eyes.
Knowledge of the word of God is very important and necessary for every Christian believer. And if you want to be a true child of God, you must make it a habit to study the word of God; not just reading it, or flipping through the pages of the Bible with no particular goal.
We know and understand God the more as we study the Bible. Through the study of the Bible, we discover many people who served and walked with God in their own days and how they walked with Him.
For example, how did David relate with God during his days; from the time he was just a shepherd boy through to his time as the king of Judah and later the whole of Israel? What were the things that David did that made God to call him a man after His own heart? How did David show his love for God? What were the things David did and God was pleased with him? Were there occasions when David caused a conflict between himself and God? How did God react during those conflicts? What were the strengths we can find in David which we can imbibe in our own relationship with God today? What were the flaws or weaknesses David exhibited which we must avoid as we walk with God today? By giving quality time to study the Bible, we would be able to discover these things and they will help us grow in our walk with God and we will be able to please Him better.
How much do you know about the man Nehemiah? Have you heard that name from the Bible before? One of the books in the Bible; in the Old testament is named after him. What were the things he did as a servant of God? What can we learn from the life of Nehemiah and how he walked with God?
How about his contemporary; Ezra? They were all carried into captivity together during the reigns of kings Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, Darius and Ahasuerus of Babylon, Medes and Persia.
This man Ezra was both a Priest and a Scribe or Writer. The books of Ezra and Nehemiah in the Bible were said to have been written by him. He played a great role in the returning of the captivity from Babylon and he made it his duty to bring reform back to Israel. Ezra knew the law of the Lord his God and ensured he taught the Israelites those laws of God and turned their hearts back to the Lord their God. Find out what you can learn from this great servant of God.
If you can give quality time to the study of the word of God, you will discover many people who served God in their time and how they served Him. What were their impact and achievements? Find out. What can you learn?
We all have heard about the man Moses. What do you know about this great man of God? Are you aware he was born right here and trained in Africa? Did you know that he was being groomed to become one of the greatest kings of the then world? But he opted out and chose to go with the chosen people of the God of heaven? Why did he do that? Find out from the Bible.
Why did God forbid Moses to enter the promised land, in spite of all he suffered in the wilderness leading the children of Israel? What can we learn in order to avoid God’s anger, putting the case Moses in perspective as we serve God and walk with Him in this side of the divide?
Discover why all the people who left Egypt, including the great man, Moses died in the wilderness and missed the promised land, leaving only Joshua and Caleb. This searching of the scriptures will help you and me learn more about God and what He requires of us. And by looking at what hindered the people who died in the wilderness and failed to make it to the promised land, we will be in a good position to learn how to serve God the better and eventually making the Rapture when it comes.
There is no better way of knowing God and how to serve Him faithfully than giving quality time and attention to the study of the word of God.
Did you know that Jesus Himself, was a scholar of the word of God and He knew the laws of God whereby it was recorded of Him that: “…after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers…”
This was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself at the age of twelve. The Bible says that he was sitting among the doctors (of the law of God), both hearing them and asking them questions. Questions on what? On the words of God and about His laws of course.
So, if Jesus, the Lord, the Author Himself, could seek to know the words of God, how much much more should you and I seek to know the word of God?
How many times, for example, do you study the Bible in a week? Let us see what Apostle Paul said to Timothy, the servant of God: he counselled Timothy to, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”.
Here Paul the Apostle was counselling young minister, Timothy to study the word of God to show himself approved unto God. That means that the more we study the Bible, the word of God, we are preparing ourselves to become God’s favourites. Don’t forget too, that your knowledge of the word of God will indeed make you powerful against your worst enemy. The word of God itself is power.
Hear what is said about this word I want you to study, how the word of God is described: “For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart”.
Have you seen a sharp knife or cutlass before? Have you seen any sharp objects before? Well, the word of God is sharper than they all. That is what you should stuff into yourself. Then think of what you will become when you feed on the word of God. You will become hot and sharp and your enemy will think twice before trying to harm you.
All what we have discussed so far, none of them can be attained without the true knowledge of the word of God.
How can you know the mind of God, if you fail to study the Bible, the word of God thoroughly? You cannot even know your rights as a child of God if you do not have the knowledge of and continue to search through the pages of the Bible.
What are the promises God has made to His children, concerning their entire life? How can you know these promises of God concerning your life? There is no other way, except through studying and thoroughly searching through the pages of the Bible; the word of God.
It is a very dangerous attitude to neglect the study of the word of God. It is a dangerous attitude because your ability to live a victorious Christian life depends on the level of your knowledge of the word of God.
I want us to understand that even Satan your archenemy uses the word of God to institute litigations against you. The Devil is known as the accuser of the brethren. Why? Because he checks out the life of a child of God to discover your faults. He monitors your activities and how you serve God in order to discover loopholes he can take to God to accuse you of unfaithfulness, laziness, carelessness and lack of commitment to God, Who you claim to serve.
You might begin to ask how would the Devil be able to see and monitor you all the time since he is not omnipresent and as such does not have the capability to be present everywhere at the same time like our God. Neither is he omniscient as he does not have the capability to know all things like our God. But how does he get to know your activities and shortcomings?
Well, the Devil has a myriad of fallen angels and demons that serve and work for him. Don’t forget too that among his army of servants are the human agents like the witchcraft and occultic forces and other agents that cannot be mentioned here. These agents are all around you, if you are discerning enough, you will see them or identify them. But many believers are not discerning so they remain vulnerable to attacks and manipulations by the forces and servants of Satan.
These are assigned to the children of God to manipulate them to go against the will of God so that he would use it to nail them. The Devil himself is a great manipulator. He manipulates your minds, your hearts, your flesh, your behaviour, your feeling and body chemistry. He manipulates all sorts of anti-God behaviours against the believers to the extent that, many spend their entire lives doing the will of the Devil, not realizing that they are actually dancing to the tune of the music Satan plays for them.
How will you be able to counter the Devil’s manipulative devices without your knowledge of the word of God? You must know the word of God to use against Satan, his demons and the witchcraft forces.
The Devil is the one who will programme laziness and lethargy in the study of the word of God through his agents and he is still the same person who will run to God and report and accuse you of not having interest in the study of the word of God.
If there is anything you and I must do every day of our lives as believers, it is to give quality time to the study of the word of God. We must study the word of God. We must study the word of truth. We must study this word of wisdom. We must study this word of power. We must study the Bible to discover the the power of the believer – the power of the believer resides in the word of God.
